Unaccompanied Minors

In 2004, SPF Justice (Ministry of Justice) set up a legal guardian service for foreign unaccompanied minors in order to ensure that each unaccompanied minor is provided with a legal guardian. Minority is established via medical procedures (X-rays of the wrist and jaw). If the person proves to be a minor, a guardian is appointed. The latter is responsible for helping the minor in his relations with his lawyer throughout procedures. He must ensure that the minor has access to school education, psychological care, and a suitable home. It is also the tutor's responsibility to take all necessary measures to trace the family of the minor in his care and to help find a long-term solution in the child's best interests.

JRS-Belgium is an active member of the "Minors in Exile" platform, which is assiduous in its efforts to improve the status and reception of unaccompanied minors.
