What we do?

JRS activities may be summarised as follows: to accompany, serve and advocate on behalf of refugees and displaced persons. The precise nature of each of these activities will vary according to needs in the many countries where JRS is represented.

In Belgium, JRS plays an active role in projects relating to detention, unaccompanied minors and advocacy on behalf of refugees. It often coordinates its work with other organisations such as CIRÉ (Coordination et initiatives pour et avec les réfugiés et étrangers), Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen and the Comité belge pour l’aide aux réfugiés. Further information on this subject is provided under "Our projects" and "Our partners".

Within the context of these projects, JRS-Belgium participates in and contributes actively to organising training courses for staff working with refugees. Ongoing training is the only way that JRS can stay abreast and, as far as possible, ahead of events.

Since JRS does not have the resources to provide systematic reception services for asylum seekers and migrants or provide them with the social assistance they require, JRS-Belgium is often forced to direct people who turn to it for help to other specialised organisations. Insofar as it can, JRS will nevertheless give them advice, information and psychosocial support.

Furthermore, when approached by people wishing to support JRS in other parts of the world, office staff in Brussels will do their utmost to advise them and put them in touch with its overseas partners.

Finally, JRS-Belgium never stops working to extend its network of volunteers and to raise funds for projects in Belgium or abroad. For further information on this subject, click on: Support us.
