UNHCR Nansen Award 2007 for JRS worker
The UNHCR Nansen Award 2007 goes to Katrine Camilleri, who is working with JRS in Malta as a lawyer to defend the refugee cause. The award is given to individuals or organizations that have distinguished themselves in work on behalf of refugees. Katrine receives the award for her courage and commitment to the defence of refugee rights. You can read the JRS press release here. Appeal to release all the families with children locked up in detention centres On 27 July 2007, JRS-Belgium co-signed this appeal following the detention of Angelica and her mother. The formateur's note After the federal elections last June, a government formateur was appointed. On 22 July 2007 he finished a draft note, which will be the basis for further negotiations. Chapter 6 of this note is about migrants and asylum seekers. The "Who can stay and who can't?" campaign On 4 and 5 April, the Asylum and Migration Forum, a forum in which JRS-Belgium participates, held an event promoting the regularisation of unauthorised migrants. Visitors' report In 2005-2006, JRS-Belgium, in cooperation with other NGOs, and Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen in particular, drew up a report on detention centres for foreigners in Belgium. This report was presented to the press in October 2006. Judgment on the Tabitha Case In October 2006, The European Court of Human Rights ruled that in 2002 Belgium had treated a Congolese child with inhumanity and disregard.
